B.C.’s best bet for cutting climate pollution

We have a short window to get the B.C. government to enact one of the cheapest, fastest, and most effective climate solutions available.

The B.C. government is drafting regulations that could drastically reduce emissions of one of the most potent climate pollutants: methane. We need the B.C. government to implement strong regulations using best practices from leading jurisdictions and not let the oil and gas industry off the hook.

The oil and gas industry continues to oppose strong climate policies, despite warnings from scientists that we're on the path to climate catastrophe. This is an opportunity for real, measurable change.

Methane is 84 times more powerful than carbon dioxide over a 20-year time frame. Leading scientists estimate this gas alone is responsible for a quarter of the changes to Earth’s climate. Recent research also reveals that methane pollution from B.C.’s oil and gas sector (mainly fracked gas) is at least 2.5 times greater than has been reported. This finding challenges the claim that natural gas, including liquefied natural gas, is a “clean” transition fuel.

If we take action, reducing methane emissions can be a big part of the solution.

Dear Honourable Michelle Mungall, Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources and Honourable George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, The federal government recently followed through on a promise to reduce methane pollution by 40 to 45 per cent over the next eight years. With these federal regulations in place, your government has an opportunity to set the gold standard for climate protection as citizens, communities and industry work to reach our climate targets while modernizing our economy. Leading scientists estimate that methane alone is responsible for 25 per cent of the changes already observed in Earth’s climate, and the problem worsens every day that we fail to take action. Peer-reviewed research from the David Suzuki Foundation and other academic studies confirm that methane pollution from B.C.’s oil and gas industry is at least 2.5 times greater than has been reported. The good news is that solutions are at hand. Peer-reviewed research and leadership by U.S. states show that cutting methane emissions from the oil and gas sector is one of the least expensive, most effective ways to address climate change. If industry cleans up leaking methane, it will create jobs and save the very resource it wants to sell. You and your colleagues in the B.C. government should seize this opportunity to show leadership on climate action while creating jobs and growing the economy by: 1. Implementing strong methane regulations to measure and cut oil and gas industry methane pollution (one of the most powerful climate pollutants) by 40 to 45 per cent over the next eight years. 2. Acting on your commitment to apply the carbon tax to methane pollution from the oil and gas sector (B.C.’s largest industrial polluter). Methane pollution is a big climate problem, but if we take action, reducing methane emissions can be a big part of the solution.
