Stop clear-cut logging in Howe Sound

The BC Ministry of Forests Lands and Natural Resource Operations (FLNRO) is seeking public input to establish new Visual Quality Objectives (VQO) for logging in the Sunshine Coast Natural Resource District (SCNRD) that could inform logging in Howe Sound for up to 20 years.

The proposed guidelines permit clear-cut, retention-cut, and partial-cut logging of up to 18% of the viewscape, with most of western Howe Sound designated for:

Retention (0% to 1.5% logged)
Partial retention (1.6% to 7% logged)
Modification (7.1% to 18% logged)

Please take a moment to send a letter calling for all of Howe Sound to be designated for Preservation (0% logged).

This is a critical opportunity to protect our forests for future generations.

Dear Ministers and Mr. Lefler, I am writing to provide feedback on the proposed Visual Quality Objectives for logging in the Sunshine Coast Natural Resource District (SCNRD). I was shocked to learn that Howe Sound is designated for retention, partial retention, and modification, with proposed clear-cut, retention-cut, and partial-cut logging of up to 18% of the viewscape. This is offensive to me. Howe Sound is one of the most spectacular fjords in British Columbia, and its forested landscapes are a defining feature of B.C.'s coastal lifestyle. With such close proximity to Vancouver, Howe Sound is a jewel in our backyard that needs to be protected. Protecting scenic values for recreation and tourism is critical to supporting the local economy throughout the district. Healthy forests are also critical to preserve Howe Sound's biodiversity, fisheries, and drinking water supply. I strongly urge you to designate the Visual Quality Objectives for all forests within the Howe Sound region for Preservation (0% logged).
